All photography and Photoshop training now available online

Due to popular demand, over the next few months I am moving all of my training and consultancy services online. You can now learn Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, smartphone photography and videography as 1:1 or 1:2 sessions via Skype, Zoom, or Google Hangouts.

For ‘off the shelf’ teaching sessions, the price is £30 for 40 minutes. If you would like bespoke training tailored to your needs, prices start at £35/hour. As there is no charge for travel, this training is available to you wherever you are in the world. I should be able to offer sessions at a time that suits you.

Extreme pinhole photography at historic houses in the Bristol and Bath area – guest speaker

A pinhole camera is one of the simplest devices you can make and, if used with care can take pictures beyond the abilities of even the most sophisticated of digital cameras.  In this informative and entertaining talk, I take the audience back in time to over 400 years BC to the earliest types of camera before looking at the work of the pioneers of analogue photography before explaining my personal journey through the history of photography and how this has inspired a pinhole project that I have been working on for nearly 20 years. Exposure times are normally measured in fractions of a second and occasionally for whole seconds or even minutes, the pictures in this talk are taken over the course of several months or even years so they capture the world in a way no normal camera can.

The extreme pinhole photography project has led to exhibitions, practical workshops, formal training sessions and invitations to chat about my work with an audience. I have delivered this talk at National Trust properties, universities, WI groups, camera clubs, history societies and many other types of group. No previous understanding of photography is required.

Talks start at £80 for a group of up to 100 people.  I normally need a large TV screen or projector with HDMI connection to run the talk. I can provide these at a small additional price. Short intro to mobile phone photography workshop (1-3 hours) (face to face & online) from £55 per hour for 1-2-1 and small group training. These sessions make great gifts and I have vouchers that can be presented to someone as a birthday present, or as a prize or reward for a work colleague.

This fun yet practical workshop shows how you can get better pictures from your mobile phone. It covers preparing your smart phone, general camera phone app settings as well as composition, exposure and editing.

The session was informative and interactive, Nigel was friendly, approachable, encouraged questions, and gave time for experimenting.  Numerous times throughout the evening, one or another member could be heard saying “I had no idea my phone could do that!”.  We have no hesitation in recommending Nigel as a speaker to any group, large or small. This popular mobile phone photography training session has been delivered at the University of Bath, Linguarama, 24 Hours in the City the Royal Photographic Society Microsoft, Zurich Insurance, Royal Automobile Club and to numerous other groups and individuals. The skills covered will help attendees to get better portrait and product pictures for social media, publicity, promotion, for pleasure or even high quality print.

Modern mobile phones are quite capable of delivering high quality, print ready images if used with care. Images can be taken spontaneously and shared immediately, saving time and the cost and delay in  hiring a professional photographer.

The workshop provides a practical and fun staff development activity or for continual professional development (CPD).

No previous photography experience required.

The practical, mobile phone photography session is between one and three hours in length (depending on content required) and attendees learn how to get better quality pictures from their mobile device and learn how to edit them. While I use an iPhone for the demonstrations, most features are also available on Android or other platforms.

We also look at a few affordable accessories that can improve quality or build on the camera’s features.

The practical class is suited to groups of up to 20 students in size, all students need to bring is a fully charged, modern mobile device. The session has been delivered to groups of over 200 individuals though this is less interactive than with smaller groups.

Capturing high quality audio and video with your smartphone (1 day on-site and online workshop)

I also offer a more advanced 1 day course which explains how to capture the best quality video, audio and still photography and editing on a mobile device. The workshop covers; photographing people, photographing objects, composition, exposure, lighting, high quality sound and video capture, filming interviews, presentations to camera and testimonials, editing and delivery.

As an alternative to a practical workshop, I also offer talks on the subject to camera clubs, photographic societies and others that want an overview of the subject rather than a practical workshop. This also works for groups larger than twenty where interaction is more difficult. This talk has been delivered to groups of over 300 attendees. Prices for talks start from £80.

Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom training

Bespoke Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom training for clients in Bath, Bristol and across the UK.

Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard application for editing still images. I have been using the application commercially since 1990 and have taught it since 1994. Some of my Photoshop illustrations have won national awards. I have taught the application at a number of universities including Bristol, Bath, Gloucestershire and Coventry and have trained people at organisations including the National Trust and the BBC.

While I run structured introduction and intermediate courses, I can also tailor my training to suit the needs of my students. For example, I have delivered a six hour Photoshop for Architects session at the University of Bath and a Raw file format workshop for staff at the BBC.

I normally discuss the clients needs free of charge and only bill for face to face teaching time. My rates start at £40/hr for sessions over 2 hours or £45/hr for 1 to 2 hour sessions. There may be a charge for travel to clients outside the Bath / Bristol areas.

Training for beginners might include; Paint Tools, Cloning, Healing, Selection, Tone and Colour Adjustment, Layers, Type and Filters. More advanced users might cover Masking, Vectors and Colour Management. I plan my training to suit the needs and level of understanding of my students so contact me to discuss how I might structure a training session.

While Adobe Lightroom offers many of the editing tools found in Photoshop its real strength is in its media management features and the ability to process a huge number of images simultaneously.
